PARVO ALERT !!!!!!!!!

3 Nov 2011

At Oakmount Veterinary Centre we have seen a large increase in the number of Parvo Virus cases locally. Parvo Virus is a severe and life threatening cause of canine sickness and diarrhoea. In the last 12 months we have lost over 30 puppies and dogs to this devastating disease.

Our aim is to reverse this trend. With this in mind we have started a campaign locally to try to increase the uptake of routine vaccinations by:

·    Trying to increase the awareness of the disease and the profound effects it has on our pets.

·    Offering dogs that have lapsed a chance to start the vaccination course again, for the same price as the booster vaccination.

·    Reducing the price of the vaccinations generally, to increase uptake.

·    Offering a blood test to check the immune status of a dog for owners who are worried about the risk of over-vaccinating dogs. (From our point of view vaccines are safer than they have ever been and the risks of not vaccinating are much greater.)

In addition to Parvo Virus, we vaccinate dogs to protect them from the following diseases :- Distemper, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis and Leptospirosis. However, the most important disease locally is Parvo Virus.

Further vaccinations are also available - against Kennel Cough (cases also on the increase) and Rabies (needed for travelling pets using the Pet Passport Scheme).
From January 2011 the Pet Passport Scheme has been simplified and travelling to Europe has never been easier. Animals need to be microchipped and vaccinated against Rabies, but there is now no need for blood tests afterwards, and Pets may travel just a short time later.
