Exotics

We are geared up and happy to look after any exotic pet

We are geared up and happy to look after any exotic pet, accepting both first opinion consultations and referrals from other veterinary practices.

The department is led by Veterinary Surgeon and Clinical Director, Sheryl Calway, who holds her GP Certificate in Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery (GpCert ExAP) and who is also a registered poultry vet.

Species routinely examined include: -

  • Birds – companion, aviary and pet poultry
  • Reptiles and Amphibians
  • Mammals – rabbits, rodents, ferrets, marsupials and others
  • Invertebrates – spiders, snails and insects
  • Fish

Wildlife

Is also accepted during routine opening hours.

Treatment or surgery, where appropriate, is carried out on-site. Patients unsuitable for early release are transported to the RSPCA’s wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Birds

From the smallest finch to the magnificent Macaw, we provide in-depth health checks, investigations and treatments.

Early referral is important to ensure best outcome in many cases. In addition, longer appointments can be arranged to tackle more chronic and complicated problems.

As captive environment so often plays a part in health and disease progression, appointments can be arranged to discuss husbandry, including provision of suitable nutrition, supplementation and UV light.

With poultry becoming more and more popularly kept as pets, we are happy to offer comprehensive advice, medicine or surgery tailored to their needs.

We routinely provide:

  • Post-purchase examinations and annual health checks, including husbandry reviews
  • Microchipping
  • Blood and faecal analyses using both in-house and external laboratories to allow rapid diagnosing and prognosis optimisation
  • Behaviour and feather plucking advice and treatment
  • Full surgical and medical management, including radiography, ultrasound or endoscopy as required
  • Hospitalisation facilities including intensive care and nebulisation
